ART OF RECOVERY

The Joely Corban Brain Injury Awareness Expo

...the name of my MFA thesis & also the name I gave to a public awareness project that I created and promoted...after hearing from Mississippians, "Art can do what?"

Then I met a board member of the BIA of MS in a Fema trailer after Hurricane Katrina.

Mary Lou Mathews agreed..."Yes, Art can do that."

"Art of Recovery" is a public awareness art exhibition of paintings done by brain injured survivors from Mississippi.

My reasoning behind pitching the idea of this show so hard, was because Mississippi is still ranked in one of the top three states in the U.S. for traumatic brain injury. That is, a brain injury from an external source...not acquired.

Why are we ranked so high? Are our rednecks just crazier than any other state?

This is a slide show of the first exhibit funded by the Brain Injury Association of Mississippi. The traveling exhibit was first displayed in the Mississippi State's Capitol Rotunda during the month of March in 2007 (National Brain Injury Awareness Month.)

Art of Recovery is now an annual event thanks to the Brain Injury Association of Mississippi. We anticipate that as participation increases in the state of Mississippi, Art of Recovery will go national with the BIA of America.
